The 81-year-old Kennedy said he is stepping down after more than 30 years on the Supreme Court.

Longtime Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his plans to retire Wednesday, sparking reactions for lawmakers across the political isle.

The 81-year-old senior associate justice has served on the nation’s highest court for 30 years. His retirement will take effect on July 31, according to a letter he sent to the White House.

Kennedy is arguably one of the most powerful members of the Supreme Court, as his moderate-conservative views often leave him to be the deciding vote in high-profile cases. The vacancy will also give President Trump the opportunity to appoint a more conservative-leaning justice.

Thank you for your service to our country Justice Kennedy; we wish you all the best in your retirement

I thank Justice Anthony Kennedy for his years of service to our country.

Justice Kennedy has had a long and distinguished career on the Court. I thank him and wish him the very best in a well-deserved retirement after a lifetime of service to our great country. I look forward to confirming a worthy successor. https://t.co/ToqXMapynk

Now that there is a vacancy, after the Garland heist, the balance of the court will be tilted even more against women’s, workers’, and civil rights for decades to come if the president nominates 1 of the 25 judges that passed his litmus tests. We need to #ditchthelist now. https://t.co/HRzSFErhLQ

I thank Justice Kennedy for his decades of service to the law, to our republic + to the American ppl Our country owes him a debt of gratitude

I look forward to @POTUS @realDonaldTrump nominating a strong constitutional conservative to the seat. https://t.co/ZzDZ7jpRXt

I’m worried about Roe v. Wade.

I want to thank Justice Kennedy for his years of service on the Supreme Court. Since President Reagan appointed him from the court of appeals more than 30 years ago, Justice Kennedy has carefully and thoughtfully approached each case that has come before him.

I wish him the best of luck in this next chapter of his remarkable life.

As a Supreme Court Justice, he called them as he saw them. He should be proud of the service he has rendered to the Rule of Law and our nation as a whole.

A nominee that is intent on carrying out the right-wing ideology of the President and his most extreme supporters.

Donald Trump has vowed that the Supreme Court should always remain Republican. The Supreme Court should be above politics, qualified, and exercise fair and independent judgment.

If the President’s nominee to the Supreme Court is anything like the nominees he’s been sending to the lower federal court, I expect that we will see a nominee hand-picked by the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation.

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy has committed his life to upholding the rule of law, and I’m grateful for his decades of service to our country. I wish him the best in his retirement.

I want to express gratitude for the extraordinary service that Justice Kennedy has offered our nation. We owe him a debt of thanks for his ardent defense of the First Amendment right to political speech. #SCOTUS

The Senate stands ready to fulfill its constitutional role by offering advice and consent on @POTUS @realDonaldTrump’s nominee to fill this vacancy. We will vote to confirm Justice Kennedy’s successor this fall.

#Justice Kennedy was a swing vote in a critical case that affirmed Roe v. Wade. He was a key vote on gay marriage. He cannot be replaced by an ideologue. The American people must have a say.
